Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a family of isomers of linoleic acid, which is an essential fatty acid of the omega 6 series, that is, the body has to intake it from the diet.

The mechanism which CLA reduces body fat is known: CLA produces the fat transport blockage to adipose tissue cells. This is because CLA inhibits the function of the enzyme LPL (lipoprotein lipase), and at the same time, favors lipolysis of fats via beta-oxidation in the mitochondria, which is the organ of the cell in charge of cellular respiration and energy production. CLA helps to increase the fat transport to the mitochondria and they are oxidized there.

On the other hand, CLA increases the activity of the CPT enzyme (carnitine palmitoyltransferase). This enzyme is present in the muscle, and it is the one which transports the fats to the mitochondria in order to used there as fuel, thus favoring the increase of muscle mass. Physical activity stimulates the fat transport to the muscle cell in order to be oxidized. This is the reason why, in the absence of physical activity, CLA does not produce the same effects.
